Brief:&nbsp;Explore ways in which illustration can be lifted off the printed page, extended and applied to represent contemporary urban scenarios and stories via the modes of space, performance, digital media, and analogue techniques. This project was born out of curiosity of what it means to be respectful within spaces of commemoration. The Pukeahu National War Memorial park is a space the is utilised by many people. Yoga, soccer, biking, skateboarding, people picnicking... Some of the activities are seen as appropriate and some are seen as disrespectful. My observation that I came across is how skateboarding is seen as disrespectful and other activities are allowed. This thought became the foundation of my project. Exploration of mediums led me to animation for my final medium. I used a playful/cartoony style to convey a positive side of skateboarding, whilst still voicing my observation of how skateboarders are&nbsp;being treated in the space. I didn’t want my observation and opinion to come across aggressive. I believe a cartoony style helps set this tone of voice. To convey the observation I animated people entering and leaving the space. When the skateboarder enters the space a security camera flickers on and when anyone else enters the space the security camera is off. My intentions with this project aren't changing peoples thoughts on skateboarding within this space, but to instead ask to question; what do you think it means to be respectful in places of commemoration? Specifically the tools used to communicate expressive information non verbally online. My fascination with these tools made me curious and wanting to contribute to this area of design.I set out to explore different design approaches for emoji, as well as using this opportunity to ask questions about the use of emoji and how they are created. On a journey to better understand emoji and broaden the idea of what an emoji can be.As an illustrator/designer I was drawn to the conversations and questions surrounding the stylistic approach for emoji. Curious about how this perspective could potentially impact emoji in a positive way. Leading me to focusing my research question on stylistic diversity for emoji.My final output is an explorational journal. Broken up into five uniquely different sections. Each section asking different questions and statements, alongside design experiments.‘Shower Thoughts’ allows me to continue to experiment and research into emerging areas of design during my self-practice.
